Antony and Cleopatra — Act 5, Scene 1: Alexandria. OCTAVIUS CAESAR's camp.

Octavius Caesar and his council are waiting in camp when he sends Dolabella to Antony with a demand to surrender. Before Dolabella returns, Dercetas arrives carrying Antony’s sword and announces that Antony is dead, describing his death as self-inflicted and honorable. Caesar reacts with surprise and sorrow, admitting that Antony’s death is a loss worthy of kings. An Egyptian messenger then reports that Cleopatra is shut up in her monument and wants to know Caesar’s intentions. Caesar tells Proculeius to reassure her, avoid harshness, and keep her alive so she does not spoil his triumph by killing herself. He then leaves for his tent.
