As You Like It — Act 2, Scene 1: The Forest of Arden.

Duke Senior appears in the Forest of Arden with Amiens and his lords, and he reflects on exile as a simpler, freer life than courtly splendor. He speaks warmly about hardship as something that teaches wisdom, and says he would not trade this life. Amiens praises him for turning misfortune into cheerful thought. When Duke Senior suggests going to hunt deer, he regrets hurting the forest animals in their own home. A lord then reports that Jaques has been deeply moved by a wounded stag and has turned the sight into a bitter moral lesson about suffering, society, and human wrongdoing. Duke Senior asks to be taken to Jaques.
