As You Like It — Act 2, Scene 7: The forest.

Duke Senior is waiting with Amiens and the lords when Jaques returns, cheerful from hearing a clown in the forest. Jaques describes meeting a motley fool who joked about time and used a dial to reflect on how people age and decay, and he praises the man’s wit while asking for a fool’s costume so he can speak freely. Duke Senior teases him, but their discussion is interrupted by Orlando, sword drawn, demanding food and threatening anyone who touches the banquet. Duke Senior calms him, gives him food, and Orlando explains he is really gentle but desperate. After Orlando leaves to feed Adam, the duke and Jaques reflect on human life, and Orlando soon returns with the exhausted Adam, whom they welcome kindly.
