Cymbeline — Act 1, Scene 1: Britain. The garden of Cymbeline's palace.

Two gentlemen discuss the growing trouble at Cymbeline’s court: the king’s daughter Imogen has secretly married Posthumus Leonatus, a poor but virtuous gentleman raised at court, and Cymbeline has banished Posthumus and imprisoned Imogen. They explain Posthumus’s noble birth and close upbringing with the princess. The Queen then appears with Imogen and Posthumus, pretends kindness, and urges Posthumus to leave while she speaks as if she will mediate with the king. Imogen and Posthumus exchange loving farewells and rings, but Cymbeline enters, denounces Posthumus, and angrily rebukes Imogen for her marriage. He orders her confined, then learns from Pisanio that Posthumus was nearly attacked by the king’s son.
