Cymbeline — Act 1, Scene 4: Rome. Philario's house.

In Philario’s house in Rome, Iachimo and the other guests discuss Posthumus’s reputation, his marriage to Imogen, and his banishment from Britain. Philario introduces Posthumus, and the Frenchman recalls meeting him in Orleans, where they had argued over women. The talk turns to Imogen’s virtue and beauty, and Iachimo begins mocking Posthumus’s confidence in her. The exchange grows into a wager: Iachimo bets ten thousand ducats and Posthumus’s ring that he can win Imogen’s honor, while Posthumus stakes his ring against the claim. Philario tries to stop the dispute, but the two agree to have the terms written down before traveling on to Britain.
