Cymbeline — Act 3, Scene 1: Britain. A hall in Cymbeline's palace.

At Cymbeline’s court, the king and queen receive Caius Lucius and his attendants, and Lucius demands the tribute Rome says Britain owes from Caesar’s time. The Queen and Cloten push back, arguing that Britain is strong enough to refuse payment and that Caesar’s old victories were overstated. Cymbeline explains that Rome once forced the tribute on Britain, but now the Britons must defend their freedom and their laws. Lucius answers that Augustus Caesar now treats Cymbeline as an enemy and declares war. Cymbeline replies that he remembers Caesar’s favor and will meet the challenge. Cloten adds a boastful welcome before the group ends the exchange formally.
