King Lear — Act 1, Scene 4: A hall in the same.

Disguised Kent returns and offers his service to Lear, who accepts him without knowing his identity. Lear asks for dinner, for his fool, and for Goneril, and grows suspicious when her servants treat him coldly. When Oswald answers him disrespectfully, Lear strikes him; Kent trips Oswald and helps drive him off, earning Lear’s gratitude. The Fool then mocks Lear for giving away his power and warns him about trusting his daughters. Goneril arrives and complains that Lear’s knights behave badly and that his large retinue must be reduced. Lear explodes in anger, curses her, and leaves for Regan. Goneril then sends Oswald to inform Regan of her fears.
