King Lear — Act 2, Scene 4: Before GLOUCESTER's castle. KENT in the stocks.

At Gloucester’s castle, Lear arrives with the Fool and a Gentleman and is shocked to find Kent still in the stocks. Kent explains that Goneril and Regan both ordered the punishment after he attacked Oswald, and Lear grows furious at their disrespect. Gloucester brings word that Cornwall and Regan are already inside, but Lear first demands to speak with them and rages when they keep him waiting. When Regan finally appears, she sides with Goneril and insists Lear must return to Goneril’s house and reduce his followers. Goneril arrives too, and the sisters agree he needs almost no attendants, which drives Lear into despair and anger before the storm forces everyone inside.
