King Lear — Act 4, Scene 2: Before ALBANY's palace.

Goneril arrives with Edmund and learns from Oswald that Albany has reacted coldly to the news of the invading army and even worse to her report about Gloucester’s supposed treachery and Edgar’s loyalty. She sends Edmund back to help Cornwall and quietly shows her affection for him before Albany enters. Albany condemns Goneril for her cruelty to Lear and her unnatural behavior, and she answers by mocking his softness and urging him to prepare for war. A messenger then reports that Cornwall is dead after a servant resisted the blinding of Gloucester, and that Gloucester has lost both eyes. Albany is horrified and turns against Goneril.
