King Lear — Act 4, Scene 3: The French camp near Dover.

Kent meets a Gentleman and asks why the King of France has suddenly returned home. The Gentleman explains that France left behind important unfinished business in his kingdom, so he had to go back at once, leaving Monsieur La Far in command. Kent then asks whether Cordelia received the letters about Lear, and the Gentleman says she was deeply moved and wept over her father’s situation, but then withdrew to grieve privately. Kent says Lear is in the town but will not see Cordelia because shame over his treatment of her troubles him so deeply. Hearing that Albany and Cornwall are both raising forces, Kent leads the Gentleman to Lear and keeps his own identity hidden.
