King Lear — Act 4, Scene 6: Fields near Dover.

At Dover, Edgar leads the blind Gloucester to what he makes him believe is a great cliff, describing the terrifying height so Gloucester will feel he has stood at the edge of death. Gloucester gives Edgar a purse and asks him to leave, then prays and falls forward, thinking he has jumped and survived. Edgar, still disguised, tells him he has been preserved by the gods and convinces him to accept his suffering patiently. As they speak, Lear appears in wild garb and rants about betrayal, power, and justice. A Gentleman arrives with attendants, then Oswald tries to kill Gloucester, but Edgar fights him off and finds a letter from Goneril plotting against Albany.
