King Lear — Act 5, Scene 2: A field between the two camps.

Amid the battle alarm, Lear, Cordelia, and their soldiers cross the stage and exit. Edgar leaves blind Gloucester sheltered by a tree, telling him to wait and hoping good will come of the fight. After the noise of retreat, Edgar returns and urges Gloucester to move on, saying that Lear and Cordelia have been defeated and taken prisoner. Gloucester grows weary and says he can go no farther. Edgar answers that people must endure death as they endure birth, and that patience is necessary. Gloucester agrees briefly, and they leave together.
