King Lear — Act 5, Scene 3: The British camp near Dover.

After the battle, Edmund brings Lear and Cordelia in as prisoners and orders them guarded. Cordelia accepts defeat with dignity, while Lear imagines the two of them living quietly together in prison, reconciled and cut off from the court. Edmund sends a captain after them with a secret order. Albany, Goneril, and Regan then enter, and Albany demands the prisoners for lawful treatment. The sisters quarrel openly over Edmund, and Albany accuses Edmund of treason. Edgar appears to challenge Edmund in single combat and defeats him. A messenger reports that Goneril has poisoned Regan and killed herself. Finally, Lear returns carrying Cordelia’s body, mourns her death, and dies from grief.
