Measure for Measure — Act 1, Scene 3: A monastery.

At a monastery, Duke Vincentio meets Friar Thomas and asks to be hidden there in a friar’s habit. He explains that he has already handed his authority over Vienna to Angelo, while pretending publicly that he has traveled to Poland. The Duke says Vienna’s laws against vice have been ignored for years, so order has weakened, and he could not rightly punish the people himself for offenses he allowed to grow. He hopes Angelo will enforce justice in his place, and he wants to watch how this severe man behaves when given power. Friar Thomas agrees to help and to instruct him in the friar’s appearance and manner.
