Measure for Measure — Act 1, Scene 4: A nunnery.

At the nunnery, Isabella and Francisca talk about the limits placed on nuns, and Francisca explains that once Isabella takes her vows she will no longer be allowed to speak freely with men. Lucio arrives and asks to be shown to Isabella. When he meets her, he tells her that her brother Claudio has been arrested for getting Juliet pregnant and that Angelo now governs Vienna in the Duke’s place. Lucio says Angelo has applied a strict law against Claudio and that Claudio is already sentenced to die. He urges Isabella to plead with Angelo for mercy, and she agrees to go at once to try to help her brother.
