Measure for Measure — Act 2, Scene 1: A hall In ANGELO's house.

At Angelo’s house, Angelo and Escalus argue over whether the law should be enforced strictly or with mercy, but Angelo insists that Claudio must die and orders the Provost to have him executed by nine the next morning after receiving a confessor. After Angelo leaves, Escalus reflects sadly on Claudio’s fate. Elbow, the constable, brings in Froth and Pompey for questioning about disorder at Mistress Overdone’s house. The confusion of Elbow’s story and Pompey’s answers turns the hearing comic, but Escalus still warns Pompey to stay out of trouble. He then sends Froth away, questions Pompey further, and finally invites the Justice to dinner before leaving with him.
