Measure for Measure — Act 2, Scene 2: Another room in the same.

The Provost asks Angelo again whether Claudio must die, warning that judges sometimes regret harsh sentences after executions, but Angelo sticks to his order and tells him to carry it out or resign. The Provost also asks what should be done with Juliet, who is near childbirth, and Angelo tells him to move her somewhere suitable and to provide only necessary care. Isabella arrives with Lucio to plead for her brother’s life. She argues for mercy with growing force, but Angelo refuses, insisting the law must stand. After she leaves, Angelo is shaken by his attraction to her and realizes that her virtue has stirred a temptation in him.
