Measure for Measure — Act 2, Scene 3: A room in a prison.

In the prison, the disguised Duke Vincentio tells the Provost he has come as a friar to visit prisoners and learn their offenses so he can minister to them properly. The Provost shows him Juliet, Claudio’s pregnant lover, and says she is with child while the man who fathered the child has been sentenced to die. The Duke questions Juliet about her repentance and whether she still loves the man who wronged her. Juliet admits her guilt, says she repents honestly, and accepts her shame. When the Duke says Claudio must die the next day, Juliet is horrified, and the Provost pities Claudio’s fate.
