Measure for Measure — Act 3, Scene 2: The street before the prison.

On the street outside the prison, Elbow and the officers bring Pompey in for acting as a bawd, and the disguised Duke condemns his trade as corrupt and harmful. Elbow says Pompey must go to prison and before Angelo himself. Lucio arrives and jokes with Pompey, then asks the friar for news of the Duke. The friar and Lucio argue about Angelo’s severity and the absent Duke’s character, with Lucio insulting both men and speaking carelessly about Claudio’s sentence. Escalus then appears with Mistress Overdone, orders her imprisoned, and hears that Lucio may have fathered a child. He confirms Claudio must die and leaves after speaking briefly with the friar.
