Othello, the Moore of Venice — Act 2, Scene 3: A hall in the castle.

As night winds down in the castle hall, Othello and Desdemona leave Cassio to take charge of the watch and remind him to be discreet. Iago then draws Cassio into drinking with some Cypriot gentlemen, despite Cassio’s reluctance. After more wine and singing, Cassio becomes drunk and agitated. Iago sends Roderigo after him, hoping to provoke trouble, and Cassio ends up attacking Roderigo. Montano tries to stop the fight, but Cassio strikes him too, and the disturbance brings Othello back. Othello breaks up the brawl, questions what happened, and dismisses Cassio from office. After Othello leaves, Iago advises Cassio to ask Desdemona to plead for his reinstatement.
