Othello, the Moore of Venice — Act 3, Scene 1: Before the castle.

At the castle, Cassio asks musicians to play softly, but a Clown mocks their instruments and sends them away after saying the general does not want the noise. Cassio then gives the Clown money and asks him to tell Emilia, Desdemona’s attendant, that he wants to speak with Desdemona. Iago arrives, and Cassio explains that he has already sent word through Iago’s wife and hopes to get help from Desdemona. Iago promises to bring Emilia to him and says he will also find a way to keep Othello occupied. After Iago leaves, Emilia comes out and tells Cassio that Desdemona is arguing for him and that Othello has reasons for refusing, but still loves him. She takes Cassio inside to meet Desdemona privately.
