Pericles, Prince of Tyre — Act 1, Scene 0: PROLOGUE

Gower appears as the prologue and explains that he is an old storyteller returning to present an ancient tale in plain verse for the audience’s pleasure. He describes Antioch as a great city built by Antiochus the Great in Syria and introduces the king’s daughter, whose extraordinary beauty has attracted many princes. Gower reveals that Antiochus has committed incest with her and has hidden his crime by making any man who seeks her hand solve a deadly riddle or lose his life. He asks the audience to judge the story as it unfolds and then exits.
