Pericles, Prince of Tyre — Act 1, Scene 1: Antioch. A room in the palace.

At Antioch’s palace, Antiochus presents his daughter to Pericles and reminds him that the riddle must be solved or he will die. Pericles sees the daughter and is struck by her beauty, but after reading the riddle he realizes it points to incest between Antiochus and his daughter. He avoids saying the truth outright, hints that the king’s secret is shameful, and decides to leave rather than expose himself further. Antiochus pretends mercy in public, but once Pericles is gone he admits that the prince has understood the crime and must be killed. He sends Thaliard with poison and gold, then learns that Pericles has already fled and orders pursuit.
