Pericles, Prince of Tyre — Act 1, Scene 4: Tarsus. A room in the Governor's house.

In Tarsus, Cleon and Dionyza lament the city’s famine and the ruin that has followed its former prosperity. A lord reports that ships are approaching, and Cleon first fears an attack, but the white flags show that the vessels come in peace. Pericles arrives and tells Cleon that he has brought grain from Tyre to relieve Tarsus’s hunger, not to worsen its suffering. Cleon gratefully welcomes him and invites him to stay. Gower then explains in a dumb show that Pericles receives a letter from Helicanus, rewards the messenger, and learns he must not remain in Tarsus. Gower adds that Pericles puts back to sea, is caught in a violent storm, and is finally driven ashore after losing everything.
