Romeo and Juliet — Act 2, Scene 4: A street.

In the street, Benvolio and Mercutio look for Romeo and learn he has not gone home. Mercutio mocks Romeo’s recent love-sickness and ridicules Tybalt as a showy, dangerous duelist after hearing that Tybalt has sent a challenge to Romeo’s family. Romeo arrives, and the three trade witty insults until Mercutio and Benvolio leave. The Nurse and Peter then enter, and Mercutio jokes crudely at their expense before he departs. The Nurse speaks privately with Romeo and warns him not to deceive Juliet. Romeo tells her to tell Juliet to come to Friar Laurence that afternoon for confession and marriage, and he arranges for a rope ladder to be sent to her.
