Romeo and Juliet — Act 3, Scene 3: Friar Laurence's cell.

In Friar Laurence’s cell, the friar tells Romeo to come out and brings him news of the Prince’s judgment: Romeo is banished from Verona, not sentenced to death. Romeo reacts with despair, saying exile is worse than death because it cuts him off from Juliet and the life he knows. Friar Laurence tries to comfort him and urges patience, but Romeo cannot accept the sentence. A knocking interrupts them, and the Nurse arrives from Juliet, reporting that Juliet is grieving in the same way. Romeo is nearly overcome, but Friar Laurence rebukes him, reminds him of Juliet and the mercy he has received, and tells him to go to Juliet briefly before leaving for Mantua.
