The Comedy of Errors — Act 1, Scene 1: A hall in DUKE SOLINUS'S palace.

In Duke Solinus’s palace, Aegeon, a merchant from Syracuse, is brought in as a prisoner and accepts that he will be executed under the law banning travel between Syracuse and Ephesus. Solinus explains the feud between the two cities and tells Aegeon that his wealth cannot buy his release. When Solinus asks why he came to Ephesus, Aegeon tells the story of his marriage, the birth of twin sons, and a shipwreck that separated him from his wife and children. He explains that he has spent years searching for one lost son and the other’s attendant. Solinus is moved but cannot отмен the sentence, so he gives Aegeon one day to raise the ransom before the gaoler takes him away.
