The First part of King Henry the Fourth — Act 2, Scene 1: Rochester. An inn yard.

At an inn yard in Rochester before dawn, two carriers complain about the miserable inn, the lack of care for their horses, and the fleas, while the first carrier calls for the ostler and grumbles about loading and feeding the animals. Gadshill arrives and asks to borrow a lantern, but the carriers distrust him and leave. He then speaks with the chamberlain, who tells him that a wealthy franklin from Kent is traveling with about three hundred marks in gold and is about to depart with his company. Gadshill boasts about his confidence and his criminal companions, then asks the chamberlain to bring out his horse before the two part.
