The First part of King Henry the Sixth — Act 1, Scene 2: France. Before Orleans.

At Orleans, Charles, Alencon, and Reignier boast that the English are weak and starving, and Charles orders an attack. The French are quickly beaten back by the English, and they return humiliated, praising Salisbury’s ferocity and the English soldiers’ unexpected strength. The Bastard of Orleans then brings news of Joan la Pucelle, a holy maid sent to drive the English out of France. Charles tests her by having Reignier pose as the Dauphin, but Joan sees through the trick at once. She claims divine guidance, defeats Charles in single combat, and wins his admiration. She promises to lift the siege and urges the French to keep fighting.
