The Life and Death of King John — Act 2, Scene 1: France. Before Angiers.

Before Angiers, the French and English forces arrive separately and immediately join the dispute over Arthur’s claim to the English crown. Lewis warmly welcomes Austria, Arthur thanks him, and Austria pledges support. King Philip receives Chatillon’s news that John has brought an army, then John and Philip exchange accusations about who is the true king. Queen Elinor and Constance argue bitterly over Arthur’s birth. When the citizens of Angiers refuse to admit either side, the Bastard urges both armies to attack the town together. The citizens then propose a marriage between Lewis and Blanch, and John and Philip agree. The Bastard ends by mocking the new peace as driven by self-interest.
