The Life and Death of King John — Act 3, Scene 3: The same.

After the fighting stops, King John enters with Queen Elinor, Arthur, the Bastard, Hubert, and lords. John tells Elinor she will remain safely guarded, and he reassures Arthur that his grandmother loves him and that John will care for him like a father. Arthur fears this will only grieve his mother, Constance. John then sends the Bastard to England with full authority to seize church wealth and use it to support the war effort. Before the Bastard leaves, John speaks privately and ominously with Hubert, praising his loyalty and clearly hinting that Arthur must be dealt with. He finally sends Elinor and Arthur on toward Calais and departs.
