The Life and Death of King John — Act 4, Scene 1: A room in a castle.

In a castle room, Hubert prepares to carry out King John’s secret order against Arthur. He tells two executioners to heat irons and wait behind the arras, then brings Arthur in alone. Arthur, still trusting Hubert, speaks gently and tries to win his pity, while Hubert struggles with his duty and his growing mercy. When he reads the warrant and sees Arthur’s fear, he cannot go through with the blinding. He sends the executioners away, saves the boy, and promises to tell others that Arthur is dead while keeping him safe in secret. Arthur thanks him, and Hubert leads him away quietly.
