The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 1, Scene 1: London. KING RICHARD II's palace.

In Richard II’s palace, King Richard summons John of Gaunt and asks whether Gaunt has brought his son Henry Bolingbroke to press the treason charge against Thomas Mowbray. Bolingbroke and Mowbray are brought before the king and exchange formal greetings before Bolingbroke openly accuses Mowbray of treason, dishonesty with soldiers’ funds, and responsibility for the Duke of Gloucester’s death. Mowbray denies the charges, calls Bolingbroke a liar, and accepts the challenge. Richard tries to stop the quarrel and urges both men to forgive each other, but neither will yield. He finally sets their duel for Coventry on Saint Lambert’s day and orders the marshal to prepare.
