The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 1, Scene 2: The DUKE OF LANCASTER'S palace.

At the Duke of Lancaster’s palace, John of Gaunt and the Duchess of York speak bitterly about the murder of Gloucester, whom the Duchess calls her husband and Gaunt’s brother. Gaunt admits that Gloucester’s blood weighs heavily on him, but he refuses to take revenge himself, saying the king, as God’s deputy, must be left to heaven’s judgment. The Duchess denounces this patience as cowardice and pleads for vengeance, then laments that Gaunt will soon go to Coventry to see Hereford fight Mowbray. Gaunt takes his leave, and the Duchess, overwhelmed by grief, asks him to greet her brother York and departs in despair.
