The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 1, Scene 3: The lists at Coventry.

At Coventry, the Lord Marshal and Aumerle see that both Harry Hereford and Thomas Mowbray are fully armed and ready for the duel. King Richard arrives with his nobles, Gaunt, and others, and the two champions are formally asked to state their names and causes. Both men repeat their accusations and defend their honor before the combat is about to begin. At the last moment, Richard stops the fight by throwing down his warder. He orders both men disarmed, then announces that he will banish Bolingbroke for six years and Mowbray for life. After the sentence, Richard makes them swear never to meet, correspond, or plot together, and the court breaks up in sorrow.
