The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 1, Scene 4: The court.

At court, King Richard asks Aumerle how far he accompanied the banished Hereford and whether there was any emotional farewell. Aumerle says he showed little grief and gave him only a brief parting. Richard then reflects on Hereford’s popularity with ordinary people and notes how freely he mixed with them, which makes him seem ambitious and close to power. Green urges Richard to deal quickly with the rebels in Ireland, and Richard decides to go there himself, even planning to raise money by taxing subjects more heavily. Bushy then reports that John of Gaunt is gravely ill and asks Richard to visit him, which Richard agrees to do with obvious impatience.
