The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 3, Scene 2: The coast of Wales. A castle in view.

King Richard arrives near Barkloughly castle on the Welsh coast with the Bishop of Carlisle, Aumerle, and soldiers, and joyfully claims England as his own ground again. He speaks as if the earth itself should help him against Bolingbroke’s rebels, while Carlisle urges him to act on the support heaven still offers. Salisbury then brings grim news: the Welsh forces have dispersed, believing Richard dead, and have gone over to Bolingbroke. Richard is shaken but tries to recover his royal confidence. Sir Stephen Scroop arrives and reports that Bolingbroke’s strength has grown and that Bushy, Green, and Wiltshire have been killed at Bristol; he also tells Richard that York has joined Bolingbroke and that more nobles have followed him.
