The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 3, Scene 4: LANGLEY. The DUKE OF YORK's garden.

In the Duke of York’s garden, the Queen tries to distract herself from grief by asking her Ladies for entertainment, but bowls, dancing, stories, and singing only deepen her sadness. She hides when the Gardener and two Servants enter and begin discussing how to prune and weed the garden, comparing it to the state of the kingdom. The Gardener says Richard’s weak rule has been overrun and reports that Bolingbroke has seized the king and that Bushy, Green, and Wiltshire have been removed. The Queen confronts him in anger, and he confirms Richard’s defeat. Distressed, she leaves for London. Afterward, the Gardener mourns her condition and plans to plant rue where she wept.
