The Life and Death of Richard the Second — Act 5, Scene 5: Pomfret castle.

At Pomfret prison, Richard reflects alone on how his confinement feels like a whole world in miniature, with his mind creating many competing thoughts. He compares himself to both king and beggar, then listens to music and laments that time has turned against him, making his suffering measure the hours. A former groom of his stable enters and speaks sadly of seeing Bolingbroke ride Richard’s old horse at the coronation. The keeper brings Richard food but says he cannot let him eat because of orders from Exton. When armed men enter, Richard kills two attackers, but Exton strikes him down and kills him. Dying, Richard sends his soul upward while his body falls.
