Prince Edward arrives in London and is welcomed by Gloucester and Buckingham, but he is uneasy that his mother and brother York are not there. Hastings explains that Queen Elizabeth and York have taken sanctuary, and Buckingham and Gloucester press the Cardinal and Hastings to bring York out by force or persuasion. The Cardinal reluctantly agrees to try. Gloucester then suggests that Edward stay at the Tower before his coronation, while Edward questions the place and speaks proudly of justice and kingship. Young York enters, sparring wittily with Gloucester over a dagger and the prince’s small size. After the princes go toward the Tower, Gloucester and Buckingham send Catesby to test Hastings’s loyalty and discuss how to handle him.
