The Merchant of Venice — Act 1, Scene 3: Venice. A public place.

In Venice, Bassanio brings Shylock to Antonio so Antonio can secure the three thousand ducats he needs to help Bassanio court Portia. Shylock first weighs Antonio’s reliability by thinking about his merchant ventures and then reveals his hatred for Antonio, who has insulted him before and criticized lending at interest. Antonio openly despises Shylock as well, but Shylock agrees to lend the money without interest if Antonio will sign a bond. He sets a shocking penalty: if the loan is not repaid on time, he may cut off a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Bassanio objects, but Antonio accepts the bond.
