The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 1: Belmont. A room in PORTIA'S house.

At Belmont, the Prince of Morocco arrives to try his fortune as Portia’s suitor. He speaks proudly of his dark complexion and says he should not be judged by it, since many women in his own country have admired him. Portia replies politely that she is not free to choose a husband by her own will anyway, because her father’s casket lottery controls her marriage. Morocco asks to be led to the caskets and boasts of his courage and fame, but Portia warns him that he must either risk the test or renounce all future marriage if he chooses wrongly. He agrees, and she arranges for the trial to take place after dinner.
