The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 2: Venice. A street.

Launcelot Gobbo decides to leave Shylock’s service, arguing with himself as if his conscience and a devil were both urging him on. His old father, Gobbo, arrives with a gift for Shylock and asks directions and news of his son. Launcelot, pretending not to be recognized, finally reveals himself and receives his father’s blessing. He says he wants to serve Bassanio instead, and when Bassanio enters, Launcelot asks to change masters. Bassanio agrees, having already been recommended by Shylock, and tells him to bring his father and arrange a finer livery. Gratiano then asks to go with Bassanio to Belmont, and Bassanio accepts while warning him to curb his wild behavior.
