The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 4: The same. A street.

In Venice, Lorenzo meets with Gratiano, Salarino, and Salanio to plan a masked supper outing and discuss how to prepare themselves in time. Launcelot arrives with a letter from Jessica, and Lorenzo recognizes her handwriting at once. Launcelot explains that he is supposed to invite Shylock to supper with his new Christian master. Lorenzo sends him on his way and gives him a message for Jessica, promising to keep his word privately. After Salarino and Salanio leave to get ready, Lorenzo tells Gratiano that Jessica has arranged how he can help take her from Shylock’s house, along with gold, jewels, and a servant’s disguise. He says Jessica will be his torchbearer.
