The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 5: The same. Before SHYLOCK'S house.

Shylock comes out with Launcelot and complains about Jessica’s habits and about Bassanio’s invitation to supper, which he distrusts even while deciding to attend. Jessica enters when Shylock calls for her, and he gives her the house keys, telling her to lock up and keep away from the Christian revelry in the street. He says he does not want to go but will still attend, and he sends Launcelot ahead. After Launcelot leaves, Shylock calls him lazy and wasteful, says he is glad to part with him, and tells Jessica to go inside and secure the doors. Jessica is left alone and says farewell, lamenting that she and her father are losing each other.
