The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 6: The same.

At the meeting place in Venice, Gratiano and Salarino wait masked for Lorenzo and joke about how lovers are always late and eager only in pursuit. Lorenzo arrives and excuses his delay, then calls for Jessica, who appears above in boy’s clothing. He greets her as his lover, and she throws down a casket of money before stepping down. Jessica says she is ashamed to be seen dressed as a boy, but Lorenzo urges her to descend and serve as his torchbearer. She goes back in briefly, then returns as Lorenzo praises her honesty and beauty. As they prepare to leave, Antonio arrives to say Bassanio’s ship is ready and the masque must be abandoned.
