The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 7: Belmont. A room in PORTIA'S house.

In Belmont, Portia brings the Prince of Morocco to the caskets and has them uncovered so he can make his choice. Morocco studies the gold, silver, and lead boxes and weighs their inscriptions against one another, trying to decide which best fits Portia and his own worth. He rejects the lead casket as too plain and the silver as insufficient, then chooses the gold because its promise seems to match Portia’s fame and value. When he opens it, he finds a skull and a scroll saying that appearances can deceive. He accepts his failure and leaves, and Portia dismisses him without regret.
