The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 8: Venice. A street.

Salarino and Salanio report that Bassanio has sailed away with Gratiano, while Lorenzo is not with them. They also say the Duke tried to search Bassanio’s ship after Shylock raised a public uproar, but it was too late. The Duke learned that Lorenzo and Jessica had been seen escaping by gondola, not on Bassanio’s vessel. Salanio repeats Shylock’s frantic cries over his daughter, his ducats, and the jewels she stole, and notes that boys in Venice mock him. The two men then worry about Antonio, especially his bond with Shylock, and mention a rumor that one of Antonio’s ships may have been lost at sea. They decide to look for Antonio and try to cheer him.
