The Merchant of Venice — Act 2, Scene 9: Belmont. A room in PORTIA'S house.

Nerissa prepares Portia for the arrival of the Prince of Arragon, who has taken his oath and now comes to choose a casket. Portia repeats the rules of the test, and Arragon studies the inscriptions carefully. Rejecting gold because it appeals to the crowd, he chooses silver because he thinks merit should be rewarded. When he opens it, he finds a fool’s portrait and a message showing that he has chosen wrongly, and he leaves in shame after keeping his oath. Portia mocks his false wisdom, but then a servant announces that a young Venetian has arrived ahead of his lord with rich gifts, and Portia eagerly prepares to see him.
