The Merchant of Venice — Act 3, Scene 5: The same. A garden.

In Belmont’s garden, Launcelot jokes with Jessica in his usual foolish way, telling her she is damned because she is Shylock’s daughter, then lightens the matter with a comic attack on converting Jews to Christianity. Lorenzo enters and teases them both, while Jessica repeats Launcelot’s insults to him. Lorenzo sends Launcelot inside to have dinner prepared, and Launcelot answers with more wordplay before leaving. Alone with Jessica, Lorenzo asks her opinion of Bassanio’s new wife, Portia. Jessica praises Portia highly, saying Bassanio is blessed to have her. Lorenzo compares their own marriage to Bassanio’s, and Jessica asks to speak of him too, but Lorenzo delays the praise until they go in to dinner.
